East Kalimantan has 162 rivers, spread out over the area. Among these, 44 are the main rivers, 55 are the branches, while 63 are the twigs. The longest main rivers are: Mahakam River (920 Km), Kayan River (576 Km), berau River (292 Km), Sesayap River (278 Km), Sembakung River (278 Km), Kandilo River (191 Km), Telake River (169 Km), Bengalon River (142 Km) and Sebuku (115 Km). While the longest branches area: Bahau River (322 Km), Kedang Kepala River (319 Km), Belayan River (229 Km), Wahau River (198 Km), Telen River (182 Km), Kendang Rantau River (132 Km), Muntai River (128 Km), and Kedang Pahu River (114 Km).
Along its flow, Mahakam River is surrounded by upland and lowland, in addition to a number of lakes which prevent flood. While Kayan River, Berau River, Sembakung River, Sesayap River and Kendilo River are covered with lowlands, which cause flood in Tanjung Redep, Tanjung Selor, Malinau/Tidung Pala, as well as Atap and pasir Belekong when heavy rain falls and comes the tide from the sea. These waters and the sea have 279 islands in the rivers, 50 on the mouth, and 229 in the sea (Sulawesi Ocean and Makasar Strait). Most of the islands are in bulungan Regency, at rivers, and at the mouth of river, as well as in Sulawesi Ocean (123 islands), among them the farthest are Sipadan island and Ligitan island. The second is in berau Regency. Although most of the islands here are small, it has high potency is fishing as well as in maritime tourism (such as diving with beautiful under water scenery). Berau has 57 islands, the farthest is Sambit Island. Furthermore, kutai Regency has many island, too, especially at the mouth of Mahakam River, the total amount is 91. They are potential with offshore gas/oil mining, especially in Bekapai and Pemarung Island.pasir Regency has 6 island, balikpapan Municipality has 2, while samarinda Municipality has none. |

Located along Kayan River, this is the capital of Long Peso Subdistrict. This village is settled by Dayak Lepo Kulit Tribe, popular with its culture and rich forest produce. This becomes transit village for hinterland people coming from headwaters.
It takes about 8 hours travel from Tanjung Selor to Long Bia. |

Lumbis Subdistrict lies at hinterland of Sembakung River, with the capital Atap. It is about 215 Km from tarakan to Atap. The Northern part of this area is contingous with East Sabah/Malaysia, the citizens are mostly of Tagel Tribe, Tenggalan Tribe, and Berusu Tribe. They live traditional life as farmers.

Located near the broad way of Sangkulirang-Muara Wahau. The cave located at Ampanas Pangadan and Mardua are very beautiful with stagtite and stalagmite, processed for ceturies. According to experts, the caves in East Kalimantan are more beautiful then those in Mexico, because they have stalagtites and stalagmites having the shave of sodastraw (sodastraw stalagtite), having the shape of glowing crystal (gaundam), thin transparent plate slab (cave craft) and having the shape of clock’s spur.
We can visit those caves through landroad of samarinda Bontang, 225 km from Samarinda, it can be reached by: Taxi ‘Kijang’, Regular boat. |
